Android is beating Iphone. History lessons from the Windows-Mac war
Apple launched Macintosh on January 24, 1984, the first mouse + graphical user interface computer. Production of the Mac is vertically integrated: apple controls hardware, the OS and the price. No other manufacturer integrates Macintosh.
Microsoft first introduced Windows in November 1985. Windows is used by hundreds of PC manufacturers.
Results: Market Share April 2010:
Windows: 91.46%
Mac: 5.32%
Iphone vs. Android: Apple was first, keeps it closed and is losing market share to Android.
Apple announced the iPhone on January 9, 2007. Production of the Iphone is vertically integrated: hardware, OS pre-installed, price.
Android distribution began on 5 November 2007. Google released most of the Android code under an open source license. What will be the market share in two years? Well during the first quarter of 2010, Android smartphones accounted for 28 percent of sales in the US; the iPhone, just 21 percent, Blackberry’s RIM was the market leader at 36 percent.
Gartner predicts that that Android will be the second most popular mobile OS (not just Smartphones) after Symbian by 2012 with 14.5% market share. iPhone comes close at 13.7% market share at number 3.
